Born in 1981,
Rémi Rouleau demonstrates his interest in handwork at an early age. Later,
he discovers his talent for music and becomes in turn guitarist, singer
and trombonist. In 1998 he enters the École nationale de lutherie in
Québec city where his main skills will naturally evolve. Having spent
three years learning the basics of violin making and repair techniques, he
successfully graduates in 2001. During this period, the violin and bow
makers Thérèse Girard and Richard Compartino contribute to push further
his interest for string instrument making. His experience in a
cabinetmaking workshop helped him to become more productive and develop
new working techniques. In 2005, he gets the opportunity to refine his
acoustic and varnishing techniques and to learn bow making basics at
Richard Compartino’s workshop. Since then, he has been operating his own
workshop in the Québec City area.
His achievements
lie at different levels. Jointly with instrument making, he also gives
drawing, varnishing and wood technology classes at the École nationale de
lutherie and is preparing a book on various technical challenges of the
craft. He is concerned with the use of local resources, the design of
original models and the development of effective traditional oil
varnishing process. His instruments are played and appreciated by young
professional musicians.
